「ホールも楽器の一部」との基本理念から、演奏会場も音響の良いホールを求め、東京を本拠地としつつ、国内外の名ホールを訪ねる演奏旅行なども企画し、幅広い地域との交流を行っている。1976年、立教大学交響楽団OBにより、合唱団の依頼に応えるかたちでヘンデル《メサイア》祝祭オーケストラとして結成。1979年に初の主催演奏会を開くにあたり、門戸を広げ、一般の社会人オーケストラとして東京を中心に自主運営活動を続けている。2026年に結成50周年を迎える。
1992年、USAコンサートツアーでは、フィラデルフィアおよびニューヨークのカーネギーホールで公演。日本を代表するジャズピアニスト山下洋輔とガーシュイン《ラプソディ・イン・ブルー》などを共演し、喝采を浴びた。1998年、ウィーン楽友協会大ホールにて日本をモチーフにした曲を紹介。2000年、北京・世紀劇院大ホールにてマリンバ奏者安倍圭子と共演し、指揮の大友直人とともに安倍の自作曲を紹介。2002年5月にはベルリン・フィルハーモニーホールにて、三枝成彰作曲のカンタータ《天涯》を大友直人指揮で海外初演し、「モルゲンポスト」紙などで好評を博す。2004年3月、レオンカヴァッロ作曲のオペラ《ラ・ボエーム》をトヨタコミュニティコンサートの一環として日本初演し、音楽関係誌で絶賛された。
2007年7月には小林研一郎指揮で第3回ヨーロッパ演奏旅行を実施。ハンガリー・ブダペストにてベートーヴェン《第九》、オーストリア・ウィーンにてマーラー《交響曲第2番「復活」》を演奏し、好評を博した。2009年7月、オランダ・アムステルダムのコンセルトヘボウ・サマーコンサートに招聘され、小林研一郎指揮でマーラー《交響曲第2番「復活」》を演奏。満席の聴衆からスタンディング・オベーションを受けた。2010年11月、三枝成彰団長の六本木男声合唱団倶楽部に同行し、イタリア・ミラノ大聖堂にて三枝成彰《レクイエム》を演奏。2012年7月、チェコのドヴォルザーク・ホールにて小林研一郎指揮のもと、チャイコフスキー《交響曲第5番》などを演奏し、スタンディング・オベーションを含む大喝采を浴びた。2018年9月には、チェコのスメタナ・ホールにて矢崎彦太郎指揮のもと、R.シュトラウス《ホルン協奏曲第1番》（独奏：カテジナ・ヤヴールコヴァ）、西村朗の作品などを紹介した。
2016年9月、開校した矢祭小学校の校歌（小林研一郎作詞・作曲）のお披露目会、2025年9月には開校10周年記念コンサートのため福島県矢祭町を訪れ、小学生や周辺地域の人々に小林研一郎の指揮でオーケストラ音楽を届けた。2017年11月、ポール・ラッシュ博士の生誕120周年を記念するコンサート（山梨県）に出演し、地域活動にも貢献している。
国内の主催公演では、ピアノの金子三勇士、山下洋輔、小山実稚恵、仲道郁代、パスカル・ドュヴァイヨン、ヴァイオリンの徳永兼一郎・徳永二男、大谷康子、千住真理子、山根一仁、チェロの宮田大、フルートの細川順三、工藤重典、ギターの荘村清志、声楽では森麻季、メゾソプラノのエレナ・オブラスツォワなど、多彩なアーティストと共演している。指揮者には、小林研一郎、下野竜也、矢崎彦太郎、飯森範親、大友直人、秋山和慶、カルロス・シュピーラー、小松一彦などを迎えている。
演奏会のライヴCDとして、マーラー《交響曲第2番「復活」》、同《交響曲第3番》、《エレナ・オブラスツォワとともに》、R.シュトラウス《英雄の生涯》（コンサートマスター：大谷康子）、ショスタコーヴィチ《交響曲第5番「革命」》をリリース。1998年には当時ベルリン・フィルのソロ・トランペット奏者であったコンラディン・グロート教授と共に、トランペットの名曲を満載したオリジナルCD《トランペット協奏曲》を、2004年にはベルリン・フィルのソロ・トロンボーン奏者オラフ・オット氏とのCD《トロンボーン協奏曲集》をカメラータ・トウキョウより、2012年にはドヴォルザーク・ホールでのライヴCDをオクタヴィア・レコードからリリースしている。

Guided by the fundamental philosophy that “the concert hall is an integral part of the instrument,” the orchestra places great importance on acoustically outstanding venues. While based in Tokyo, it actively plans concert tours to distinguished halls both in Japan and abroad, fostering musical exchange with a wide range of regions.
The orchestra was founded in 1976 by alumni of the Rikkyo University Symphony Orchestra, originally formed as the Messiah Festival Orchestra in response to a request from a choir to perform Handel’s Messiah. In preparation for its first self-promoted concert in 1979, the ensemble broadened its membership and has since continued its activities as an independently managed amateur orchestra centered in Tokyo. The orchestra will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2026.
In 1992, during a concert tour of the United States, the orchestra performed in Philadelphia and at Carnegie Hall in New York, where it collaborated with renowned Japanese jazz pianist Yosuke Yamashita in works including Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, receiving enthusiastic acclaim.
In 1998, the orchestra appeared at the Musikverein Great Hall in Vienna, presenting works inspired by Japanese themes.
In 2000, at the Century Theatre Grand Hall in Beijing, it collaborated with marimba virtuoso Keiko Abe, introducing her own compositions under the baton of Naoto Otomo.
In May 2002, the orchestra gave the overseas premiere of Shigeaki Saegusa’s cantata Tengai at the Berlin Philharmonie, conducted by Naoto Otomo. The performance was highly praised by the Morgenpost and other media.
In March 2004, as part of the Toyota Community Concert series, the orchestra presented the Japanese premiere of Leoncavallo’s opera La Bohème, earning strong acclaim from music journals.
In July 2007, under the direction of Ken-Ichiro Kobayashi, the orchestra undertook its third European tour, performing Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in Budapest and Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 “Resurrection” in Vienna, both to great success.
In July 2009, the orchestra was invited to the Concertgebouw Summer Concerts in Amsterdam, where it again performed Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 under Kobayashi, receiving a standing ovation from a sold-out audience.
In November 2010, the orchestra accompanied the Roppongi Male Choir Club, led by Shigeaki Saegusa, to perform Saegusa’s Requiem at Milan Cathedral.
In July 2012, at the Dvořák Hall in Prague, the orchestra performed works including Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 under Ken-Ichiro Kobayashi, earning overwhelming applause and standing ovations.
In September 2018, at the Smetana Hall in Prague, conducted by Hikotaro Yazaki, the orchestra presented Richard Strauss’s Horn Concerto No. 1 (soloist: Kateřina Javůrková) and works by Akira Nishimura, among others.
In September 2016, the orchestra visited Yamatsuri Town, Fukushima Prefecture, to premiere the newly established Yamatsuri Elementary School song (lyrics and music by Ken-Ichiro Kobayashi). It returned in September 2025 for the school’s 10th anniversary concert, bringing orchestral music to local children and residents under Kobayashi’s baton.
In November 2017, the orchestra also contributed to regional cultural activities by performing at a commemorative concert in Yamanashi celebrating the 120th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Paul Rusch.
At its domestic subscription concerts, the orchestra has collaborated with a wide range of distinguished artists, including pianists Miyuji Kaneko, Yosuke Yamashita, Michie Koyama, Ikuyo Nakamichi, and Pascal Devoyon; violinists Ken-Ichiro Tokunaga, Tsugio Tokunaga, Yasuko Otani, Mariko Senju, and Kazuhito Yamane; cellist Dai Miyata; flutists Junzo Hosokawa and Shigenori Kudo; guitarist Kiyoshi Shomura; and vocalists such as soprano Maki Mori and mezzo-soprano Elena Obraztsova.
The orchestra has worked with many eminent conductors, including Ken-Ichiro Kobayashi, Tatsuya Shimono, Hikotaro Yazaki, Norichika Iimori, Naoto Otomo, Kazuyoshi Akiyama, Carlos Spierer, and Kazuhiko Komatsu.
Live concert recordings released by the orchestra include Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 “Resurrection”, Symphony No. 3, Elena Obraztsova in Concert, Richard Strauss’s Ein Heldenleben (concertmaster: Yasuko Otani), and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5.
In 1998, together with Prof. Konradin Groth, then principal trumpet of the Berlin Philharmonic, the orchestra released the original CD Trumpet Concertos. In 2004, it released Trombone Concertos with Olaf Ott, principal trombonist of the Berlin Philharmonic, both on Camerata Tokyo. In 2012, a live CD recorded at Dvořák Hall was released by Octavia Records.
